Dramaturgies of Attention

Group exhibition

8 May - 27 June 2026

A+ Works of Art, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

 Curated by Alain Zedrick Camiling

“How does meaning emerge as we move across surfaces, spaces, and ways of seeing?

Dramaturgies of attention perceives meaning as something that is produced by each individual’s dynamic negotiation between matters, structures, and the movement of attention itself, explicated through perceptual zones, where multiple ways of seeing and looking intersect and coexist. In this lens, works in this exhibition are approached as conditions shaped by multiple dramaturgies, framing how we gather, disperse, and redirect attention.” - azc

In this exhibition, Gomes presents a new body of work, A Study of Makeshift Markers. The aluminum works are a survey of the improvised assemblages used by the public to  reclaim space, parking spots in particular.

Each of these makeshift markers are documented from areas that the artist frequents during his  daily commutes and evening walks. They are welcomed injections of personality and spontaneity in  an otherwise banal, and at times, solitary urban sprawl.

The markers forms are hand-drilled, embroidered into, and finished with the coordinates of each  marker’s last recorded location onto aluminium sheets. The individual sheets are then interlinked  together, forming a larger tapestry of metal and thread. The acts of repetition and labour are an  integral part of the process, treating each pass as a small act of remembrance, a minute addition to  an incremental map of days.

These days, the marker population is dwindling as city councils began mandating that each house  possess its own outdoor garbage bin, replacing the markers with uniformed orange wheelie bins.  The culling prompted Gomes to create this series as a permanent archive of these everyday oddities,  a love letter that highlights their nature as transient, temporary landmarks, and an attempt at  preserving pockets of expression in the mounting indifference of the city.
