4 - 6 October 2024
JIEXPO Kemayoran,
Jarkata, Indonesia
A+ Works of Art is delighted to announce our participation in Art Jakarta 2024, bringing together artists of diverse practices to showcase both emerging and established artists from across the region.
Joshua Kane Gomes continues his thematic exploration of disgruntledment and self-doubt in this body of work. He confronts the expectations and anxieties that make up the dualistic identity of a 30-year-old: artist and adult. While external forces- may it be luck, cosmic entities, or a higher power–can act as easy scapegoats, the artist ultimately embraces the daunting realisation that one is responsible for where they posit themselves.
Through the use of birthday paraphernalia, the artist juxtaposes playful imagery with a heavy world-weary sentiment to address the pressing issues on mind, from sustainability, stability, to standing in society– including the art world. Three dejected figures lie in amongst a dozen scattered cupcakes, each frosted with captions of despair and exasperation. These figures loosely reference Freud’s theory of personality– the id, ego, and superego– highlighting the inner conflict between desire and authenticity when navigating the art world.
In this installation, the artist invites you to enter a scene of deep angst and growing dread that come with increased responsibilities and societal pressure as one ages.
Join us at Booth A6 in JIEXPO Kemayoran from the 4th to the 6th of October, 2024.

Hotel Art Fair, InterContinental Bangkok Sukhumvit
Bangkok, Thailand
A+ Works of Art is delighted to announce our participation in Hotel Art Fair, taking place at InterContinental Bangkok Sukhumvit from September 6 to 8, 2024:
Born from the fear of the number four in the Sinophone world, enter Level 13A. Defined by what isn’t seen, the hotel sees transient families, whispered arguments in forgotten languages, and the invisible figures who maintain its silence. Behind closed doors, these spaces are designed to erase traces of the past, preparing for the next fleeting guest.

CIMB Hotel Art Fair, Four Points by Sheraton
Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Malaysia
A+ Works of Art is pleased to announce our participation in the CIMB Hotel Art Fair with a solo presentation of Joshua Kane Gomes' The After-party.
The exhibition is premised upon the idea of a party that has been dragging on for too long and too late, in which Gomes' presents a mix of sculptures and site-specific installations that evoke manic lethargy and intrusive introspection. Gomes writes:
"A fleeting glimpse of your own reflection, a passing remark, a slightly-overenthusiastic laugh, a brief moment of clarity. Amidst the embers of festivity and last dregs of your social battery, you feel a familiar plunge.
Intoxication or insight?
Hits of ill-conceived epiphanies muddle once-happy thoughts alongside a flood of overstimulation as the fatigue comes crashing down. Polite excuse, tight smile, and exit stage left. When it’s 3am and you’re wrestling dizzyingly terrifying, absurd existential beasts, it might be time to call it a night; things tend to look brighter in daylight after all."

In his second solo exhibition, Violent Delights, Gomes’ narrates the anxieties and expectations of reconciling the dual timelines of a 30-year-old artist versus a 30-year-old adult. Through the mediums of sculpture and installation, Gomes raises concerns of long-term stability and sustainability with consideration to conventional responsibilities such as filial duty and self-care.
The necessitation of cost to one’s self in relation to creative output is called into question in works such as All That Glitters Isn’t Gold, a series of skeletal unicorn pinatas, gutted with almost comically oversized pink plastic cake knives, offering up sweets to viewers as they bleed rainbow hues.
Text also plays a significant role in Gomes’ presented works, combined with objects into amalgamations that confront the viewer with moods oscillating from mania to melancholy, such the exhibition’s namesake: VIOLENTDELIGHTS, a spiked baseball bat with soft embroidered text, hinting at roots of tenderness in self-destructive behaviours. Gomes continues down this line of inquiry in works such as Echo and Spaces Once Held, posing phrases in familiar objects that express feelings of avoidance, yearning and loss.
While whimsical and playful with an emphasis on birthday paraphernalia, there is an atmosphere of world-weary heaviness to Gomes’ sculptures, this body of works are presented as equal parts a tongue in cheek commentary on millennial woes; and a sincere expression of existential angst, self-doubt and vulnerability.
